Which War are you Fighting, America?
December 9, 1941
Emily Peterman
Two days ago, America was shocked by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Yesterday the U.S. declared war on Japan (Thornton). But are the rest of us really surprised?
Canadians have been helping the war effort since September 1939. We’ve sent men and ships and artillery and rations to the front, as is our duty. True, so have the Americans. But they’ve also been dealing with Nazi Germany.
Monster car companies, such as Ford, opened operating plants in Germany before the war. That’s innocent enough, until you consider that those plants are still open and operating, and selling vehicles to that Nazi army (Kakos).
When the war began, Standard Oil (together with Du Pont and General Motors) sold Hitler the knowledge and means to produce synthetic fuel (Kakos), without which the current German march across Europe would not be possible.
Finally, Alcoa (the Aluminum Corporation of America) has been sabotaging the so-called ‘American war effort’ by selling nearly all of its aluminum to Germany. Now that American aircraft stationed in Pearl Harbor have been destroyed, there is no metal to build new planes (Kakos). What has the American government done about this? Nothing.
The first decisive ‘act of war’ the U.S. performed was to cut off oil exports to Japan. As a result, 2341 men are dead (Thornton). They’ve been drawn into the war whether they like it or not. The rest of us say, “It’s about time.” The United States needs to pick a side and stick with it.
Even money has to take a backseat to honour.

For What Purpose, May I Ask?
August 13th, 1945
Written by: Lockerbie Newton
On the 6th of August, just one week ago, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world’s first atomic bomb, the world’s first weapon of mass destruction, over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. (Hiroshima: the first city destroyed by a nuclear weapon Nuclear Darkness, Global Climate Change and Nuclear Famine.)
At least 90% of the city has been wiped out.
Tens of thousands of people are being confirmed as dead.
Unknown numbers are now dying of radiation poisoning.
It is the biggest man made explosion in history.
And it occurred a second time, three days later another bomb was dropped in they valley of Nagasaki.
All this because one bomb, that was dropped out of one airplane, that was the equivalent of 20,000 tons of TNT. (The Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, About.com)
And for what purpose, may I ask?
According to the USA the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified in order to bring a swift end to the war without a "costly and bloody" invasion on Japan. However, when a one drops a bomb that annihilates 90% of a city... one DOES invade japan it is certainly very costly and very bloody.
Do not listen to those who justify the mass murder by saying we saved many a life by ending the war much quicker that it would have been without the bomb. The war would have been over just as fast had they not obliterated a whole city full of innocent civilians with a weapon that seemed almost to have the the power of the sun inside it. This, the United States of America knew. Japan’s military situation was hopeless. The United States controlled Japans skies and their seas with the utmost exoneration. Japan had no hope of bringing anything into the country or exporting anything out. Japans supplies lines were cut off. The country had not seen white rice in over a year. They had no supplies to help with the war effort and they had reduced the Japanese army to nothing but a small group of young boys. Japan was on the brink of surrender, as all knew with the utmost intelligence and there is no doubt that President Truman knew these facts as well when he made the decision to use nuclear weapons. In fact, I myself have seen the diary entry in his own handwriting that concerns “the cable from the Jap emperor asking for Peace.” (Hiroshima Didn’t Have to Happen, Four Winds10.com) The United States of America DID know that he war would have been over soon, without having to use a weapon that destroyed tens of thousands of innocent civilians. However, the question still remains, why did the bombing of Hiroshima take place?
Based on the facts I have presented, I conclude that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were mere experiments and a way of settling old scores. The USA wanted revenge. They could have bombed Germany. They could have stopped the unjust and cruel genocide that was taking place, but they didn’t. They chose Japan because it was they who bombed Pearl Harbor and the Americans wanted vengeance. I also believe that the bombing of Hiroshima was an experiment. Yes, the USA had seen what the weapon could do as they had tested it before: They had seen it vaporize a 100 foot steel tower, they had seen it make a crater almost 2, 400 feet across and almost ten feet deep, they had seen it change the desert sand to a jade coloured glass. (First Atomic Test, Trinity Atomic Website)
…But they had not seen what it could do to people. Hiroshima was an experiment… it was lucky for the Americans that there was a war going on to use as an excuse to pardon them in their testing of their new toy. (Hiroshima Didn’t Have to Happen, Four Winds10.com)
A survivor described the damage to people:
The appearance of people was . . . well, they all had skin blackened by burns . . . . They had no hair because their hair was burned, and at a glance you couldn't tell whether you were looking at them from in front or in back. . . . They held their arms bent [forward] like this . . . and their skin - not only on their hands, but on their faces and bodies too - hung down. . . . If there had been only one or two such people . . . perhaps I would not have had such a strong impression. But wherever I walked I met these people. . . . Many of them died along the road - I can still picture them in my mind -- like walking ghosts. (The Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, About.com)
Picture this in your mind and tell me, is this really what human beings should be doing to one another? Should man make a fellow man suffer in such a fashion? To me, no act against America or Canada that the Japanese have committed is as big enough to answer with a crime such as a nuclear weapon. No crime is too big to let people have a second chance. No crime except this one. A weapon of mass destruction is a weapon that cannot be pardoned. If we have created a bomb that is so powerful it can demolish a city, then what does our future hold in store?
